What is cellulite?
First of all, what is cellulite?
Cellulite is a skin condition. It is an alteration of the circulation that causes an increase in the consistency and thickness of the skin. In people's eyes, it appears as bumpy textured and dimpled skin.
It appears on the thighs, buttocks and hips, although it can also develop on the arms and even in the cervical region.
And, as you know, it mainly harms women. But there are also men with cellulite.
Why does cellulite arise?
Cellulite is a multifactorial condition, so it has many causes.
Understanding its various causes can help you develop a better anti cellulite strategy to manage and reduce its appearance.
The most common factors involved in cellulite:
● Hormonal changes, especially in women, can wreak havoc on cellulite. It tends to rear its head or worsen when there are shifts in hormone levels, such as during puberty, pregnancy, or menopause. Hormones like estrogen have a role in fat distribution, connective tissue structure, and blood flow, which can contribute to the formation of cellulite.
● Vascular factors also have a say in cellulite's appearance. Proper blood flow and healthy circulation are crucial for keeping tissues in tip-top shape. Unfortunately, cellulite-prone areas often experience impaired blood circulation and lymphatic drainage. This can lead to fluid retention, toxin buildup, and increased pressure on the tissues, making cellulite more noticeable.
● The family ties also play a part in cellulite. It turns out that genetics influence your likelihood of developing cellulite.
● You are what you eat, they say, and your diet can have an impact on cellulite. Hypercaloric diets promote water retention, fat accumulation, and toxin buildup—all ingredients for cellulite formation. Opting for a balanced diet with whole foods can help reduce the risk and severity of cellulite.
● Believe it or not, mechanical factors can also contribute to cellulite's appearance. Certain lifestyle habits and choices can put the squeeze on your skin. Wearing tight pants or garments that compress your skin, especially in areas prone to cellulite, can hinder proper blood flow and venous return, making those dimples more noticeable.
Everyone's cellulite is unique, and it's normal to have a combination of different types or even different experiences in different areas of the body. Understanding the type of cellulite you have can help to address it.
Let's review the different types of cellulite:
● Soft or flaccid cellulite: This is the most common type. It is usually located on the thighs, hips, and buttocks. When you touch these areas, the skin feels soft and sinks in, and you can see it move when you change your posture. It often shows up in women who lead sedentary lifestyles or have tried strict diets for weight loss.
● Hard or compact cellulite: This type is a bit tougher to handle. When you try to pinch it, it feels firm and sometimes even painful. It's more commonly seen in younger women who have good muscle tone. Unfortunately, this type of cellulite is a bit stubborn and can be challenging to get rid of.
● Edematous or watery cellulite: This type is a bit of a mix between the soft and hard cellulite. It is often found in the lower extremities and can be sensitive to the touch. Edematous cellulite is associated with vascular problems and fluid retention. So, if you notice your skin feels a bit squishy and you experience discomfort when pressing on these areas, you might be dealing with this type.
There is no magic solution for cellulite, and results take time. However, there are certain anticellulite treatments that may improve this skin condition.
Apart from the various aesthetic treatments available, there are dermopharmaceutical treatments that act on three different levels:
● Venotonics: These treatments target the circulatory system by accelerating blood circulation and facilitating lymphatic drainage. By improving circulation, they help reduce fluid retention and promote the elimination of toxins.
● Restructuring or fibrinolytic Agents: These treatments work on the connective tissue surrounding cellulite nodules. They help break down collagen and elastin fibers, which contribute to the dimpled appearance of cellulite. By promoting the remodeling of connective tissue, they aim to improve the texture and smoothness of the skin.
● Lipolytics: These treatments focus on the adipose tissue, which is the fatty tissue involved in cellulite formation. They stimulate the degradation of triglycerides within the fat cells, aiming to reduce the volume of fat deposits and improve the overall appearance of cellulite.
Note: The effectiveness of anti-cellulite treatments varies from person to person, and consistency is key. Alongside anti-cellulite treatments, adopting a healthy lifestyle that includes regular exercise, a balanced diet, and staying hydrated can further support your anti-cellulite efforts.

It's worth noting that cellulite is common, particularly for women, and especially after pregnancy. However, it doesn't have to be a problem that you have to live with indefinitely. Through targeted efforts, you can significantly reduce its appearance and be pleasantly surprised by the results.

As said, each body is different, and the results vary from one person to another. However, in general, the recommendations that I give to my clients are:
Step 1: Clean your eating habits
It is not about losing weight, but eating eat high-protein, low-carb foods and drink a lot of water. Since protein repels water and promotes its elimination.
Step 2: Body brushing and massage are your friends
You don’t need to waste a lot of creams and treatments.
A hydrating cream is enough if accompanied by body brushing since it helps to move lymph around. I recommend treating your bodies with daily body brushing and massaging for a couple of minutes both morning and night to bring oxygen-rich blood to the surface.
Step 3: Stay as active as you can + resistance training
Staying active can help reduce the visibility of cellulite. If you start today, you will quickly notice the difference.
Incorporate resistance training with light cardio exercises into your routine.
Resistance training helps tone and strengthen your muscles, which can improve the appearance of cellulite. Coupled with light cardio, this combination promotes overall fitness and aids in reducing cellulite.
Step 4: Keep moving, stay motivated, and embrace your body's unique journey!
Embrace a holistic approach that combines clean eating, hydration and self-care, and regular exercise practices definitely will reduce cellulite appearance and improve your overall body confidence.
